Stephen Colbert Shows Off iPad at The Grammys [VIDEO]

Just when you thought the iPad hype may be winding down, Stephen Colbert opened up The Grammys by pulling out the new Apple device instead of an envelope to present the show’s award for “Song of the Year.”

Colbert then jokingly turned to Jay-Z and said “did you not get one of these in your gift bag?” and asked his own daughter, also in attendance, if she finally thought he was cool. He then presented the award for “Song (song) of the Year” to Beyonce (beyonce) and team for “Single Ladies.” Kanye is surely applauding somewhere.

My Early Impressions of Apple’s iPad & a Quick Hands-on Review

For a long time, the world has been searching for a device whose capabilities and design place it right smack in the middle of a phone and a laptop. But while some have argued that netbooks were the answer, to me they’re nothing more than cheap laptops. Today, that third device came out of stealth, thanks to Apple. It’s essentially a super-sized iPhone with the power of a laptop. Thanks to an uber-mobile chip and stunning 9.7-inch IPS display, the iPad is an ideal device for today’s world.

Despite their evolution, laptops and desktop computers as we know them are essentially work tools. They’re designed for content creation — be that of writing blog posts (or a book), editing photos or creating videos. On the iPhone, we create content of another kind — personal, communication-centric content.

The iPad, on the other hand, is made for the consumption of digital media: games, music, photos, videos, magazines, news papers and e-books. Sure you can use it to check your email or work on a keynote, but the iPad’s primary purpose is to help you consume the ever-expanding amount of digital content on offer.

So in many ways, today is a brand new day for content creators and owners alike. For if we’re smart, all of us — from large media giants such as Fox to upstarts like my little company — will figure out how to build a new magazine/news experience that leverages the iPad’s powerful processor, great graphics, stunning display and most importantly, Internet connection. In fact I’ll go out on a limb and say that today may be the day we start to rethink how we build web sites.

In the meantime, here’s a short and sweet hands-on review.

Despite the size, the device is light (1.5 pounds) and is easy to both grip and use. The screen size is ample, the processor powering is beefy and as a result, the iPad is amazingly brisk. And onscreen reading is easy on the eyes.

Most impressive are its multitouch capabilities, which work anywhere on the massive screen. Since I was already familiar with the iPod touch and iPhone, figuring out how to use the iPad was easy.

First the good stuff:

* There is one single button on the entire device, which I think is just brilliant because it means fewer distractions.
* There’s a sleep/wake button at the top, much like the iPhone.
* There’s a headphone jack.
* I like how the device switches from landscape to portrait mode so quickly in all four orientations.
* The web browsing experience is easy and satisfying, thanks to an ultra-responsive touchscreen.
* The Maps application is pretty stunning, especially the street view, which comes alive on the iPad screen like never before.
* YouTube works as advertised, including the HD videos. It’s a damn shame there isn’t an iPad version of Hulu.
* The iTunes store and iTunes Video work very well, and the music buying experience is no different than, say, on a Mac.
* It’s simple enough to plow through a whole bunch of email very very quickly.
* iPhoto is a much better experience on the iPad than you would imagine, especially the slideshows.

Now here is the stuff I don’t much care for:

* The onscreen keyboard isn’t as great as I thought it would be.
* The screen resolution of 1024 X 768, or about 4:3, is underwhelming.
* There’s no way to lock the device into either portrait or landscape mode.
* The decision to work with AT&T for a wireless 3G data is just straight-up dumb. It’s not like Apple doesn’t know how bad the performance of the AT&T network is.

And a couple of additional facts:

The device will work with any Bluetooth keyboard, but not with a Bluetooth mouse. The keyboard dock for the device will cost about $69. A case/stand is going to cost $39.

Bottom line: If I didn’t own a Kindle or an iPod touch, the decision to buy an iPad would be an easy one. But I own both, and even if I only owned one of them, it would be a tough decision. More thoughts on this device later, when I’ve had time to digest its impact and implications.

Bejeweled virgins, the object of the game is to switch adjacent gems, either horizontally or vertically, in order to line up three or more of the same types to earn points. When this happens, the gems vanish, allowing new gems to fall from above. This can result in cascades, in which gems align by where they fall and more points are earned, the points for each level being represented by a growing bar. A level is won by completing increasingly more sets of gems and lost when "NO MORE MOVES" appears. There's more to it than that, of course.

My Fave iPhone App - SG Buses

It will even handle changing buses (one changeover only). Pretty neat. According to developer Muh Hon Cheng, this is based on the same engine he used for Transit app which he developed back in the day when jailbroken apps ruled.

The controls are quite responsive — the ship moves both from left to right and up and down on the screen so you can shoot enemies and snag upgrades that float across.

iBowl's gameplay is pretty simple. It's a bowling game so all you have to do is roll a virtual bowling ball towards a group of pins on a realistically rendered bowling lane. It's as simple as that, and yet I really find this game pretty interesting and entertaining at the same time. SGN made sure that this game would not turn to be just another virtual bowling game by introducing another element of fun in the game. And it is through the way way you control the bowling ball.

Iphone Game - Fastlane Street Racing

The first thing that hits you about Fastlane is the game’s graphics quality. Fastlane is the best looking iPhone racer, hands down. What’s more, the game runs at a decent framerate and experiences very few slow-downs. Of course, you’re racing only three other vehicles and the on-road traffic is at a bare minimum, but still–it’s a lovely looking game.

Iphone App- Maze Finger

MazeFinger is a exactly that, a finger maze. The goal is to get from the start to the finish(of each level), before the energy(on the left/right side) runs out. During the maze you’re challenged with different obstacles(like skulls and red blocks). Touch a red block and you have to lift your finger up(then back down) and continue through the maze(which wastes your time/energy).

I Love Katamari iPhone Review
Disastrous technical issues totally spoil a quirky cult favorite.

December 15, 2008 - Who loves Katamari? A lot of gamers do, actually. Though still considered a cult series, Katamari Damacy and its many sequels are quite well known amongst gamers. The plight of the prince, destined to roll up stars in an unending quest to earn the approval of his father, has rarely changed since the original PlayStation 2 outing. Chocolates, cats, cars -- all of it needs to rolled into a mass large enough to go atomic and become a star in the heavens. The iPhone edition of Katamari employs a strict "if it ain't broke" philosophy, which seems like a wise idea from the outset. But when you try to actually control the giant ball of junk...

It is not often that I find myself holding my iPhone upside down, craning my neck while hanging off the side of my chair. Actually, I never had to resort to contortions at all to play an iPhone game prior to I Love Katamari. After reading a very easy-to-understand set of controls that make complete sense -- tilt the phone side to side to curve the katamari, tilt it forward and back to accelerate or apply the brakes -- I started rolling up caramels and pencils in hopes of getting a katamari large enough to pick up a cat, as requested by the King. The game seemed a little sluggish at first, but tapping on the katamari a couple times gives you a nice speed boost that helps when rushing through a line of stuff or hopping over a small obstacle.

However, as the katamari grows and grows in later levels, the controls go south. Tilting the device forward no longer seemed to get the ball rolling. I kept having to tilt it farther and farther away from my face to get it to move forward, especially when my katamari was as large as car. Soon, I was tilting it so far I had to stand up to look over the edge of the screen. Trying to boost the katamari by tapping it did little but spin the ball in place. And that's when the iPhone was finally dilly-flipped so I could finish a level in time. (There are no save points in Katamari. If you are 2 millimeters shy of your goal at the end of a 7-minute stage, too bad. Start over.) The larger the ball, the slower the game -- and that just drains the fun out of Katamari.

According to Namco, you can recalibrate the tilt by by just touching the katamari. So, any time you want to tap the katamari for a speed boost, you are also recalibrating the katamari. And even this does not solve the problem of a slow, ungainly ball that doesn't move smoothly at all, no matter how many times you try to recalibrate the accelerometer.

Also frustrating about I Love Katamari: the camera. On several occasions, the camera would be caught on something like a corner and then stick there while I tilted the iPhone around to free it. This is very irritating when you are closing in on the time limit. Because the camera fails to offer consistently good (or even decent) views of the katamari, you often find yourself rolling over things without actually picking them up. The ball has to touch the item to pick it up, and from where I stood, I must have been missing objects by mere pixels. Sometimes things worked great. Other times I wasted precious seconds rolling back over a bottle multiple times before it stuck.

Finally, the entire game chugs when you reach a diameter threshold. You have to hit certain diameters in order to pick up larger and larger objects. When you cross the needed diameter, a little chime plays and a visual flourish shows the ball growing (and the prince shrinking in comparison). During this animation, the game cannot keep up. The whole thing slows to a crawl that takes 15-20 seconds to recover from -- if at all. You're left to ask if this game fully tested?

At least the game shares the winning look and soundtrack of the rest of the series. Through headphones, the goofy music sounds great (and not bad through the on-board speakers either). The visuals are straight out of the PS2/PSP games, full of bright colors and all sorts of silly flair. Really, get a load of the King. He's just bizarre.

It's too bad technical issues -- controls, speed, camera, framerate -- are so catastrophic, because Katamari is a perfect fit for the iPhone. Tilting the device seems like the best replacement for losing the twin stick controls found in the PS2 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. But it just never comes together. The game desperately needs an update before the App Store just passes it by. (Especially with Rolando on the way.)

This game works really well on the iPhone. I did have some lag on my jailbroken 3G but after rebooting my iPhone it was fine. The controls are set up very nice and if you are a former Sim City fan, you’ll love it. If you’re new to Sim City, make sure to check out the help on the main menu before you get started so you can get to know how the game works.
